James Molesworth highlights 15 South African Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, Cabernet Francs and blends of these and other Bordeaux varietals (the Engelbrecht Els 2004 being the only exception with Shiraz included in the blend) in a recent Wine Spectator article.

Mr Molesworth calls South African Shiraz 'more exciting' than our Cabernets and is ‘less enthused’ by our Merlots, which – with ‘some exceptions’ – ‘offers middling light red fruit and herb notes'.
